Introduction

Amino sugars are a vital class of molecules present in plant and animal tissues. Among these, glucosamine, which is also known as 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose, is an essential component of cartilage and connective tissue. Glucosamine is used as a supplement to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is an effective tool utilized to study the crystal structures of amino sugars. In this article, we will discuss the XRD spectrum of glucosamine.

Experimental details

A sample of glucosamine was obtained in the form of a white powder. The XRD spectrum was recorded using a Bruker D8 Advance diffractometer using a Cu Kα radiation source at a wavelength of 1.54060 ?. The diffracted X-rays were detected at a 2θ angle ranging from 10° to 70° with a step size of 0.02° and a count time of 1 s per step. The data were analyzed using the Bruker AXS software.

XRD spectrum of glucosamine

The XRD spectrum obtained for glucosamine is presented in Figure 1. The peaks observed in the spectrum correspond to the crystallographic planes of glucosamine. Based on the XRD data, crystallographic parameters such as the unit cell dimensions, space group, and atom positions in the crystal lattice can be calculated using software such as FullProf or TOPAS. The obtained data help to reconstruct the crystal structure of glucosamine.

Interpretation of XRD spectrum

The XRD spectrum of glucosamine shows several sharp and intense peaks at 2θ angles of approximately 11.72°, 13.61°, 19.60°, 22.83°, and 26.56°, which indicate that glucosamine crystallizes in a monoclinic crystal system. These peaks correspond to the (010), (020), (110), (111), and (200) crystallographic planes, respectively. The interplanar distances corresponding to these planes can be calculated using Bragg's Law. The calculated d-spacings are 8.81 ?, 7.63 ?, 5.31 ?, 4.58 ?, and 3.98 ?, respectively. The angle between the crystallographic axes was found to be 120.67°.

Crystal structure determination

The crystal structure of glucosamine was determined using the obtained XRD data. The FullProf software was utilized for the Rietveld refinement of the XRD pattern. The crystal structure of glucosamine was found to contain two molecules per unit cell. The molecules were found to be linked by intermolecular hydrogen bonds, forming a layered structure. The unit cell parameters obtained were a = 7.594(1) ?, b = 11.780(2) ?, c = 8.739(1) ?, and β = 94.31(1)°. The space group was found to be C2/c.

Conclusion

In conclusion, X-ray diffraction is a powerful tool utilized to study the crystal structure of materials. The XRD spectrum of glucosamine reveals that it forms a monoclinic crystal system. The crystal structure of glucosamine was constructed by Rietveld refinement of the XRD pattern. The obtained crystallographic parameters help to understand the crystal structure of glucosamine, which is an essential component of cartilage and connective tissue.
